Feasibility Study: Investment Fund for Businesses
to integrate Low Income Populations within the Value Chain

snv
    Background

Following the launch of a partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in early 2011 SNV is conducting a feasibility study to establish a private equity fund in Bangladesh.

SNV - The Netherlands Development Organisation and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have initiated a private sector mapping study under the Inclusive Business Investment Fund Feasibility in Bangladesh. The study is focused on identifying companies that work with or have the potential to work with the low income sector of society as a means to do better in their businesses. This is known as Inclusive Business (IB) and IB is a profitable and sustainable entrepreneurial initiative that seeks to integrate low-income segment within the value chains of companies as suppliers, consumers, distributors or employees. IB potentially increases company profitability and as well contributes in greater benefits for the community.

In Bangladesh the study is being conducted by BetterStories Limited, a local entrepreneurship development think tank, in conjunction with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) from December 2011 to March 2012. The study team plan to meet 100 CEOs with an objective to identify and map companies with the potential to develop or currently implementing inclusive businesses in Bangladesh.

SNV the Netherlands Development Organisationis committed to deliver market based solutions for companies and low income populations in emerging markets worldwide. In Asia, SNV is active in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Bangladesh.

Objective
Determine the feasibility of launching a $100 million private fund focused on providing debt and/or equity to companies operating in Bangladesh and interested in developing and/or scaling business ventures with low-income populations (the base of the pyramid markets) as suppliers, employees, distributors or even consumers.
